The Elegant Side of Kamakura: Local Favorites & Gourmet Markets

September 2025 Seasonal up date
Just a short stroll from Kamakura Station’s West Exit, you’ll discover a quieter, more charming side of town known as “Hidden Kamakura.” This lovely neighborhood is dotted with special little shops loved by stylish local ladies with an eye for quality.
From Kinokuniya, a premium Japanese supermarket, to charming boutiques, restaurants, and patisseries run by well-known local personalities and talented chefs, there’s so much to explore.
Today, we’re sharing some of the favorite spots that Kamakura’s local ladies simply adore.
On your next visit to Kamakura, why not slow down, wander through these lovely streets, and enjoy a little taste of life as a “Kamakura Madame”?
Kinokuniya Kamakura Store

Kinokuniya is perhaps Japan’s most famous luxury supermarket. Outside Tokyo, its Kamakura store is said to be the only one of its kind.
Here, you’ll often see elegant local ladies arriving in their luxury cars, not only from Kamakura but also from nearby Zushi and Fujisawa. You might even spot a Jaguar or two in the parking lot on a weekday! There’s certainly a little touch of high society in the air.
Fresh produce, meat, and other groceries can be quite expensive, so doing all your everyday shopping here might be a bit of a luxury. But try picking up just a head of cabbage or a small portion of meat, and you may be pleasantly surprised by how delicious they are.
It’s easy to see that the prices reflect the quality of the ingredients. Kinokuniya also offers a wonderful selection of original products, from beautifully packaged preserves and condiments to freshly baked bread. Even browsing the shelves is a delight, and many of these lovely finds would make more thoughtful gifts than the usual Kamakura souvenirs.

Lesanges Kamakura Main Store

Kamakura is home to many wonderful patisseries and stylish cafés, but Les Anges holds a special place in the hearts of the local Kamakura ladies.
The shop is especially famous for its “Petit Four Salé,” a delightful assortment of savory cookies beautifully presented in an elegant tin. With several varieties inside, these little treats pair perfectly with a glass of wine. And they are absolutely delicious!
But perhaps it’s not just the sweets that keep Kamakura’s elegant ladies coming back. The beautiful, classic storefront, the peaceful atmosphere, and the pleasure of enjoying a leisurely afternoon tea all add to the charm of this lovely patisserie. The cakes are just as wonderful, and it’s the kind of place where you can feel perfectly comfortable relaxing on your own.
Les Anges also offers a lovely selection of beautifully packaged gift assortments. It seems that many local ladies stop by to pick up something special to bring along when visiting friends or family in Tokyo.

Set within the spacious grounds of a historic Western-style mansion in Kamakura, Koga Residence is now home to an elegant fine-dining restaurant and a beautiful wedding venue. It is also a favorite among Kamakura’s sophisticated local ladies, especially for its popular afternoon tea, held once a month.
What makes this afternoon tea truly special is the luxurious setting and the exquisite selection of savory bites, each thoughtfully
prepared using the refined techniques of fine dining. After enjoying the delicate finger sweets, guests are treated to fragrant Chinese tea and a beautifully presented mango cake. Every little detail makes the experience feel well worth the price.

Kamakura Lilian Bakery

Lilian is a lovely bakery with a beautiful, classic storefront that perfectly captures the timeless charm of Kamakura. Many local Kamakura ladies stop by almost every day to pick up their favorite everyday bread, such as pain de mie. Inside the shop, a handy board displays the baking schedule, so you can easily find out when your favorite loaves will be fresh from the oven.
It’s a much-loved neighborhood bakery where many locals have made Lilian their go-to spot for daily bread.
The bakery also offers a wonderful variety of savory breads, including delicious Japanese curry buns. Kamakura’s elegant local ladies seem to have a soft spot for shops with a classic, distinguished appearance that also offer excellent value for money. Boutique Rimini

The owner of Rimini, a charming boutique on Onari Street, is a well-known figure among Kamakura’s stylish local ladies. With her wonderful sense of fashion, she’s something of a style icon in the neighborhood.
Inside the cozy little shop, you’ll find a delightful selection of beautifully made, everyday clothing at surprisingly reasonable prices. The racks are filled with lovely pieces, and even if you pop in just for a quick look, chances are you’ll discover something you simply can’t resist.
While many of the clothes are especially flattering for women in their 40s and beyond, the boutique’s timeless style and carefully chosen pieces also attract younger fashion lovers. It’s one of those lovely little Kamakura shops you’ll want to visit again and again, just to see what’s new.

Regalez-Vous

A local Kamakura lady once told me, “Whenever friends come to visit, this is where I take them.” And it’s easy to see why! Regalez-Vous is a charming dessert café specializing in beautifully plated desserts known as “desserts à l’assiette.” Here, you can enjoy delicate soufflés drizzled with delicious sauces, gorgeous parfaits made with seasonal fruits, and other exquisite sweet creations.
One of the loveliest parts of the experience is watching the finishing touches being added right before your eyes, as a delicious sauce is gently poured over your dessert. It’s a little moment of magic, and the desserts are just as wonderful to taste as they are to look at.
The croissants, made with premium French AOP butter, are simply exceptional, and the truffle croissants are equally irresistible. But my personal favorite is the kouign-amann.
I may not be a true Kamakura Madame, but this is one treat I wholeheartedly recommend!
The café itself has a warm, cozy atmosphere that makes you want to linger a little longer.
You might even spot a local Kamakura lady stopping by on her own, simply enjoying a peaceful cup of tea and a little something sweet.

Throughout this article, I’ve been using the term “Kamakura Madame” to describe the elegant local ladies of Kamakura. But I’ve actually had the pleasure of meeting a few women who truly embody what I imagine a Kamakura Madame to be.
One of them, whom I’ll call Mrs. A, was a fellow student in my tea ceremony class. She had been married for nearly half a century to her husband, who runs a medical clinic in Kamakura. She was beautifully graceful, deeply cultured, and always thoughtful toward everyone around her. What impressed me most was that she never spoke unkindly of others. Her quiet patience and kindness left a lasting impression on me. I remember thinking, “This is someone whose elegance comes not just from her upbringing, but from the way she chooses to live.”
Over the years, I’ve met other lovely Kamakura ladies, too. By observing their little habits, favorite places, and ways of enjoying everyday life, I found the inspiration for this article. And I must say, wherever I may live in the future, I hope to grow into someone with that same quiet grace and kindness.
