As the weather warms up, I feel like going on a day trip when the weekend comes with good weather. Without any specific plans, I’ll drive along the coast, following my mood. Today, my dog, who has been mostly indoors during the winter, is joining me. Driving around Miura Peninsula allows for a comfortable experience without heavy traffic along the coastline. You can start with just yourself and pick up delicious lunch from bakeries or grocery stores along the way, enjoying it by the seaside. Alternatively, you can also visit dog-friendly cafes or restaurants. Let me introduce some places and shops to enhance your short trip to Miura Peninsula.
First, head towards the Yokosuka Museum of Art located within the Kannonzaki Park on the east side of Miura Peninsula. On a sunny holiday, take the coastal road without using the expressway, enjoying the view of the sea while driving.
It’s a favorite museum where I sometimes come alone to visit when there’s an exhibition that interests me. When not going to see an exhibition, I enjoy a meal at “Aqua Mare,” which is attached and allows dogs. The terrace seats are at a casual Italian restaurant where dogs are welcome.
Holidays can be crowded, and there might be long waiting times. However, it’s totally fine. You can take a short walk down to the coast by crossing the road or relax on the lawn. The location is so good that you can rather use it as a leisurely time. Bring a picnic mat and drinks, and you can enjoy a picnic on the lawn as well.
On this sunny holiday in March, the wait time at the restaurant was one hour. So, we crossed the road and headed to the coast. While strolling with the dog, observing people fishing or collecting seaweed (those who can identify seaweed types might want to bring a plastic bag), we enjoyed a leisurely walk. Although the Kannonzaki Hotel on the Keikyu Line is under renovation, it’s a place I’d like to visit sometime, especially for its spa when without the dog. We spent this perfect downtime pondering such things.
Keeping an eye on the time, we returned to the museum. While we took care of necessities like using the restroom, it seemed our table was ready. My partner and the dog were already relaxing at the terrace seats. The spacious terrace with its wide view is soothing to both the eyes and the soul.
The lunch set with drinks, featuring local vegetable salad and piping hot lasagna, pizza, or pasta, was surprisingly reasonable considering the quality of the establishment. We decided we should come back in the summer, perhaps not as the designated driver next time, and enjoy a glass of sparkling wine in the afternoon.

Beach End Cafe” is like a condensed version of all the greatness of Miura Coast. The space, renovated by ourselves, feels luxurious, with meticulously crafted spacious areas.
Today, we’re here for breakfast (until 10:30 AM). While the restaurant interior seems comfortable, opting for the terrace seats with counter tables on the wooden deck facing the coastline is a mood. Enjoying the blueness of the sea right in front of us while planning the day’s activities over a meal. It’s a spacious area where even the dog can completely unwind.
Just being here at this cafe might be the very purpose of our dog-friendly drive.

I go to “Su Kanagosso” at least once a month. It’s a large store where you can buy locally grown vegetables directly from the farmers. It’s cheap, fresh, and offers high-quality vegetables. Many professional chefs also come here to shop, and sometimes you’ll see people buying incredible amounts of produce. Besides vegetables, they also sell meat, sweets, and various other ingredients, making it a delightful experience! I recommend clearing out your refrigerator’s vegetable compartment before heading there.
By the way, last week, we bought broccoli, cauliflower, romanesco, Chinese cabbage, cabbage, spinach, daikon radish, potatoes, taro… Our household is still using the vegetables we bought. It’s definitely one of the most popular spots in Miura, and there’s really no comparison to other stores.
In addition to agricultural products, souvenirs from the Miura region, Hayama beef, and cut flowers are also popular items.
Especially the cut flowers are surprisingly cheap, and sometimes there are stylish flowers or branches, which are instant buys. There is also a wide variety of deli foods available. Seasonal fruit daifuku and dense mugwort dumplings are among my favorites.
You can also buy croquettes made with Hayama beef and enjoy them hot at the tables outside. The rich soft serve ice cream made with milk from Sekiguchi Ranch in Miura is also a must-try treat for us.
It’s a large-scale direct sales outlet where cooking enthusiasts can’t resist the selection of ingredients. Be sure to visit “Su Kanagotto” when you get a chance.

Ashina Bakery is located in Ashina, Yokosuka, on the Miura Peninsula. Ignoring this bakery and continuing on Route 134 is something I haven’t done since discovering it.
The variety of freshly baked bread, their flavors, shapes, and prices are all outstanding! Whether sweet or savory, everything they offer is fantastic.
Despite the convenience of having a branch in Zushi that opened last year, I still find myself wanting to visit the original store to enjoy their lineup. The staff at the Zushi branch, just like those at the Ashina store, exude an atmosphere of enthusiasm, conveying their love for the bakery and the joy they find in making bread.
I’m starting to crave their bread again. I think I’ll go back soon.

Tateishi Coast (Akiya)
If you decide you want to eat the bread you bought at Ashina Bakery, you’ll drive all the way here. On weekends, there’s usually a line of cars, but on weekdays, you can easily find free parking and enjoy leisurely activities like strolling along the sandy beach or having a picnic with a blanket.
You can enjoy the slow pace of Akiya, unique to this area. On sunny days, you can also enjoy a magnificent sunset at this scenic spot.
By the way, the “Tateishi（standing stone）” from which the area gets its name is the large rock seen above the dog’s head in the photo.
With free parking, you can take a leisurely stroll or visit nearby restaurants, making it a comfortable place to relax. The terrace at “Restaurant Don,” famous for its watarigani (Japanese blue crab) pasta, is pet-friendly, so you can bring your dog along. In summer, it’s also a popular spot for locals to enjoy swimming at the beach.
You can see the entrance sign from Route 134, and if you turn towards the coast, you’ll find the parking lot. On weekdays, there may be a few cars lined up, but you can usually park without stress. In summer, it’s essential to expect crowds, but if you go early in the morning, you can park all day, which is convenient.
There are toilets in the parking lot. The beach is a mix of gravel and sandy shores.

Drive to the Miura Peninsula and feel the shimmering sea and the refreshing sea breeze. It’s a relaxing atmosphere without the congestion of the Shonan area, yet there are many wonderful places to explore. It’s especially recommended for those with dogs. How about going next weekend?
