At the Sunday morning market in Hayama, enjoy breakfast

July 2022 Seasonal up date : 3

On Sunday mornings, I wake up early and take my dog for a walk to the Hayama Market, which is held every Sunday.

The main purpose is to get the cut-off cakes from the popular patisserie, ‘La Mare de Chaya’ . But besides that, we often go as a family to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the morning market and have breakfast on leisurely days.

The market offers various stalls unique to the morning market scene, and since the lineup changes a little each time we go, it’s always something to look forward to.

In July mornings, before the temperature rises, we visited the bustling Hayama Fishing Port.

A common conversation on a Sunday morning in summer: “Shall we go to Hayama?”

When someone in the family suggests, “Let’s have breakfast at the Hayama morning market tomorrow,” it all starts with the decision of whether to queue up for the cut-off cakes or not. This is because obtaining the cut-off cakes from ‘Patisserie La Mare de Chaya‘ is an incredibly popular and cheap item that requires careful timing and consideration of the season and weather.

This time around, one family member volunteered to queue up on-site from 6:15 in the morning, so we agreed to it. Considering the sales start around 8:30, it’s quite a commitment, and it’s somewhat amusing. Last time we went, despite lining up from 7:30 under good weather conditions, they were sold out before we could get our hands on them, so perhaps this is our chance for redemption.

In the morning, we sent out the early riser equipped with a foldable chair and a fully charged smartphone battery, and around 8 o’clock, the rest of us (along with the dogs) joined the queue. We found a family already in line, positioned around third or fourth from the front. “Wow, that’s pretty far up, well done!” we praised as we joined them, only to realize there was quite a substantial line forming behind them.

Since the quantity of cakes available for sale varies from time to time, it’s important to stay vigilant.

Entrance to the fishing port. If you’re lost, the staff ahead will guide you.
The line extends from the table on the left to the right, then bends at a 90-degree angle and continues towards the back on the right-hand side.
In the morning, you inevitably crave coffee. Coffee costs 200 yen.
The soup, warmed gently in a double boiler to avoid overcooking, is packed with plenty of vegetables, making it healthy. It’s also stomach-friendly with an abundance of finely diced aromatic vegetables.

At the market. At the usual store.

Upon arrival, with some time to spare, we head to the usual soup and bread stall to buy breakfast. They offer “Minestrone,” “Pork Stew,” and “Clam Chowder,” each priced at 500 yen with toast included. It’s a popular shop with reasonable prices, and it often sells out quickly. It’s nice to see them grilling the toast right in front of you; you can tell they put effort into it.

Other options include the classic Danish pastries from ‘BleDore‘, croquette sandwiches from ‘Hayama Asahiya Butcher‘, packed lunches like the shirasu(whitebait)rice bowl, coffee, pizza, and bulk olive oil sales, among others. Everything looks delicious.

There are stalls with freshly caught fish and discounted Kamakura vegetables, allowing visitors to enjoy the bustling atmosphere while strolling around, eating, and drinking.

The start of selling sliced cakes.

After enjoying a post-meal coffee, the line for sliced cakes started moving. It seems like the sales have finally begun. Each person can purchase one pack per person. In our household, we particularly love the ‘Catherine’ chocolate cake, so we were thrilled when we got our slice. Although the cake is priced at 510 yen per piece in the store, it’s quite a bargain when you get a slice like this.

The fruit tarts, available for separate purchase, are also relatively easy to get even towards the end of the line, and they are also recommended. There are usually 2-3 varieties of fruit tarts available, and it’s common to buy plenty for souvenirs. The pear tart is especially recommended.

The limited-edition tarts, not sold in stores, are also very popular.

One pack contains plenty and costs only 100 yen. Not only is it a great deal, but it’s also delicious.
At the fish market, a set of flying fish, flounder, and thread-sail filefish is 500 yen. Spiny lobsters are 1000 yen. What a bargain!
Please note that the prices of fish may vary depending on their size and season, so these are just for reference.

Information regarding access and parking

Our home is within walking distance to the market, but Zenigata-suri Fishing Port is also easily accessible by car.

There is parking available at the restaurants affiliated with the Hayama Hikage Teahouse group near the market, and since they sometimes have stalls set up, parking there is free (though on a first-come, first-served basis). Additionally, the paid parking at the fishing port is convenient and reasonably priced.

Both the fishing port and the morning market are outdoor spaces, so you can enjoy them with your dog. However, since it can get crowded, please be mindful if your dog is not comfortable in crowds.

Nearby, there’s Marlow with terrace seating at Hayama Marina. After a leisurely stroll around the marina, you can enjoy Marlow‘s pudding in a cup. They open at 10:00. They also offer seasonal menus, and in spring, you can taste fully ripened strawberries from Miura, which is highly recommended. If the free parking lot at the entrance of the fishing port is available, it would be lucky.
The parking fee for regular cars at the fishing port is 310 yen per hour.
The pear tart costs 1000 yen. The best choice is the cut-off pieces of the chocolate cake ‘Catherine’.

Finally…

On the way back, it’s convenient to be able to shop quickly as they also stock products from popular bakeries like ‘Bledor’ and butcher shops like ‘Asahiya’ in Hayama. I’ll also buy freshly caught fish and Kamakura vegetables at the port. Finally, when I bought the remaining assorted fish, the shopkeeper kindly put in ‘enough ice’ because it was hot. The temperature has already risen, and the sky is clear blue. It’s beautiful weather. Skipping over the rainy season, summer in Hayama has arrived again this year.
